about

DELTA STYLE - ALBUM NOTES

Delta Style was recorded for one purpose only: To pay tribute to
the music created in the Delta Mississippi region during the
late 1920’s to the 1950’s.It started a revolution in the
global music industry from the three J’s onward: Tommy
Johnson, Lonnie Johnson and Robert Johnson as well
as Bessie Smith, Big Walter Horton, Skip James, Arthur
“Big Boy” Crudup, Elvis Presley, Mississippi Fred
McDowel, Sleepy John Estes, Big Bill Broonzy and
Lightnin’ Hopkins. Although some of these cats were not
from the Delta region like Lightnin’ Hopkins for example,
you can still see that the influence of Robert Johnson
is very present in his music. He also made an impact on
Muddy Waters and many others.

The Blues was invented by people who didn’t have a chance to live a happy life. In the 1930’s Robert Johnson wrote a song called “Traveling Down Riverside Blues”.That says it all. Despite living in an era where racism was a widely-accepted part of society with Jim Crow laws and lynch mobs, these musicians found a way to
have a great time playing and singing their heart out while traveling through the Mississippi Delta. They created their own form of freedom and self-expression in spite of their circumstances. The last track on this album is a cover of the classic “Kind Hearted Woman” by the late great Robert Johnson. Frank D’amour and I play electric guitar and harmonica, taking it to the next level and showing that Chicago
blues was simply amplified Delta Blues.
